springtime in the mountains and nature is awakening in all her glory. The trees and flowers are budding beautifully and our birds have returned to build their nests.

is a fine time to plan a visit to Cumberland to hike or bike along the C&O Canal, ride the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, enjoy a wonderful stage performance at the Cumberland Theatre, or reacquaint yourself with nature in our magnificent mountains.

For a complete Calendar of Events for spring and summer 2008, visit the Allegany Visitors Bureau website at www.mdmountainside.com, or call 800-425-2067. Below are some details on a few of our favorites.

The C&O Canal is free and always open. Biking along the canal will afford you the opportunity to observe the nature and beauty of Western Maryland up close and at a leisurely pace. You may bring your own bikes and keep them safe and dry in our garage or use our bikes at no charge when you stay with us.

For lots of useful towpath biking information visit www.bikewashington.org. Once there click on "C&O Canal Biking Guide". For shuttle service and other bike tour support along the Canal, we recommend you contact Darrell Spence of Allegany Expeditions at 800.819.5170, or Charles Cheek at 301.707.6097, www.freedomtrailriders.com. They will take good care of you.

NOW OPEN: The Allegheny Passage Trail, a 165 mile bike path from Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland is finished. It is now possible to traverse the Mid-Atlantic region from Pittsburgh to Washington DC via bicycle on a unified trail system linked in Cumberland: the Allegheny Passage and the C&O Canal Towpath. The Passage winds through some of the most beautiful areas of Pennsylvania and Maryland. Awesome! For more information visit: www.atatrail.org

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, www.wmsr.com, begins its season on May 3rd. The railroad runs between Cumberland and Frostburg, winds through some of the most beautiful countryside in our area. It's a great way to enjoy the spring flowers. Click on our Special Offers section for a special discount on Railroad tickets when you stay at the Inn.

The Cumberland Theatre www.cumberlandtheatre.com - Western Maryland's only Actors Equity Company begins its 21st season with "Jekyll & Hyde " July 9-27; followed by "Copenhagen" August 13-31; Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie" October 8-26; Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" November 28 - December 14. We know you'll love an evening at the theatre as much as we do.

Take your pick of opportunities to enjoy nature and the incredible wildflowers of our region. Here are two of our favorites.

Fallingwater, the Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece is only 1 1/2 hours from the Inn. It is set among an astonishing grove of Rhododendron and the resulting combination of nature and architecture is certainly unique.

Spring is a great time to experience this magnificent home. Also, you may wish to visit Kentuck Knob, a lesser known but wonderful home about seven miles from Fallingwater. We will gladly help you make arrangements to tour one or both of these fascinating homes.

The Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort is about eight miles from the Inn. The centerpiece of the resort is the Jack Nicklaus signature golf course - and it is beautiful! Hilly and tight at times, the course winds through mountain gorges and meadows – all the while enjoying spectacular views of Lake Habeeb. Why not bring your clubs along and give it your best shot?

Please see our Regional Activities page for more ideas for things to do while in Cumberland.
